Design development process in fashion designing

Design plays a key important role in fashion designing. It is ingenious, creative as well as an appealing design that attracts the customers. However, brainstorming creative ideas and presenting them to the clients/customers is not a spontaneous process. It is a step-by-step process from research, designing to the presentation.

1. Research

The designer carries out intensive research on the collection type, fashion trends and fashion forecast. It also involves deciding the material to be used, the season at which the apparel will be launched, how much cost will be needed for the product and setting up of an intended budget.

2. Theme

The design of a particular outfit is depended upon its theme, i.e., whether it is for an occasion or for a particular season. Apart from this, the theme revolves around factors such as nature, objects, social interests, market demand, common interests and emotions.

3. Client Profile Board

Different customers have a different personality and different taste when it comes to fashion. So, the designers should assess details such as age group, demographics, income, status, season, lifestyle, the attitude of the customers in order to create designs that they will surely love.

4. Accessory Board

Every outfit is incomplete without the right set of accessories such as handbags, jewelry, watches and other accessories. So, a fashion designer considers all the accessories that would gel with the outfit. In fashion designing

• Carried Accessories: Like handbags, parasols, umbrellas, etc.
• Worn Accessories: Like watches, belts, sunglasses, boots, etc.
• Detachable Accessories: Like Badges, pins, etc.

5. Flat Sketch Sheet

Once everything is decided, the designer creates a blueprint of the garment. It comprises the garment details such as stitches as well as their types, trims and fabrics, seam types and placement, number of pieces to construct, etc.

6. Trim and Fabric Board

It consists of details of garments such as fabrics, threads, closure (button, hooks), embellishments, label, etc.

7. Muslin Fit (Toile)

It is a test fit process which involves either of the two methods, i.e., pattern making method or draping method. The design is executed on a cheaper fabric before performing it on real fabric so as to correct any flaws in it.

8. Actualising

Toile is then performed on the real fabric after removing flaw and it is done with the help of marker, wheel or scales.

9. Costing

All the expenses incurred in the production of a garment is included to put the cost of the product such that profits can be earned.

10. Presentation

Finally, the produced apparel is launched at various retail stores, e-commerce stores, fashion runways and at exhibitions.

This is the meticulous development process that every designer follows before launching any new line of garments. Each process needs to be executed painstakingly to witness success.
