Is Design a Career Only for Artists?

A recent study affirms that in India, students don’t know what to focus on, what they want to opt for as a career or they do choose their stream under the influence of others. The higher education system in India has needed a paradigm shift from traditional education systems to experimental and project-based learning. There is a strong need of gaining the right knowledge about different programs to explore new opportunities globally.

Since the last decade, along with the commerce and science stream, there is significant popularity for the arts and design courses also. The method of digitalization has widened the growth and opportunities for the arts and design courses including B.Des and M.Des. Over the years, B.Des has evolved and offered opportunities in the field of Graphic Designing, VFX Design, Multimedia Designing, Visual Communication, and Game Designing. However, there is still confusion among students that B.des is only for artists or art lovers or any 10+2 student.

Bachelor of Designing, as the name suggests is an undergraduate degree course in the field of designing. A 4 years program that offers specialization in Industrial Design, Fashion Design, Product design, communication Design, User Experience Design, and much more. This has broadened the scope of BDes degree with global level career opportunities in industries as well as new technology learning. The degree program will give exposure to the design industry with internships, events, exhibitions at national and worldwide.

BDes is perfect for students who are interested in studying and applying the theoretical and practical aspects of design elements in various fields. This degree aligns design techniques and skills with the latest technology for innovation and development. Aspirants can consider pursuing different course specializations in the design discipline to get professional guidance on how to explore and enhance their instincts. So, the eligibility is not only restricted to have artistic and sketching skills but extended to having a keen interest and minor drawing skills. An aspirant needs to possess the natural flair to assess trends and basic knowledge of design elements.

Basic eligibility is the completion of XIIth class with a minimum of 50% in any stream. Although, the eligibility criteria vary as per the norms of the university, colleges, states, and country. Admission to BDes is also subjected to the clearance of the Design Entrance exam. Many universities and colleges conduct entrance exams to shortlist candidates and offer admissions. The long list includes DAT, NID, UCEED, CEED, AIEED, UID aptitude test, and so on. Students need to focus on the subject they have a flair for and in which they want to make their career. Accordingly, one can prepare for the entrance exams and can get admissions in one of the top designing universities in India.
